Vanessa Kirby, renowned for her portrayal of Princess Margaret in the first two series of The Crown, recently revealed that certain explicit intimate scenes were cut from the show.
In an interview with Dolly Alderton on the Love Stories podcast, the actress explained that the decision to remove these scenes was made because the writers felt that viewers "didn't need to see that."
One of the scenes in question featured Queen Elizabeth, played by Claire Foy, and Matt Smith's Prince Philip during their Commonwealth tour in South Africa in the first series. The scene, which depicted a s*xual encounter between the royal couple, was ultimately deemed unnecessary and was left out of the final edit.
Vanessa also disclosed that there were plans for similarly explicit scenes involving her character, Princess Margaret, and Anthony Armstrong-Jones, played by Matthew Goode. These scenes were intended for the episode that depicted the couple's engagement and eventual marriage.
However, after careful consideration, it was decided that the aim of the show was not to titillate the audience.
While viewers may have missed out on the steamy scenes, The Crown's upcoming third series promises to bring plenty of drama. The role of Princess Margaret will now be taken over by Helena Bonham Carter, and Olivia Colman will portray Queen Elizabeth.
The series is expected to delve into the turbulent marriage of Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon, played by Ben Daniels, exploring the complexities of their relationship leading up to their separation in 1976.
Despite the removal of these racy scenes, fans eagerly anticipate the return of The Crown with its new cast and compelling storylines. The third series is set to premiere on Netflix on November 17th, offering an immersive journey into the lives of the British royal family.
