Jamie Lee Curtis has been the driving force behind the long-awaited Freaky Friday sequel, advocating for its development for years.
In October 2022, Curtis unveiled her envisioned premise for Freaky Friday 2 during an appearance on The View. She expressed her desire to portray a "sexy grandma" opposite Lindsay Lohan, her co-star from the original film. Curtis envisioned Lohan as the "hot grandma," while she herself would navigate the challenges of modern-day parenting. Lohan, upon receiving Curtis's proposal, enthusiastically confirmed her interest in the sequel during an interview with Jimmy Fallon.
Fast forward two years, and Freaky Friday 2 is officially underway. Curtis teased the news on March 29 by reposting a selfie with Lohan from their November 2023 reunion, hinting at the sequel's development. Disney subsequently confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the project is indeed in progress.
Nisha Ganatra, known for her work on Welcome to Chippendales, has been selected to direct the sequel. Curtis and Lohan are currently in negotiations to reprise their roles from the original film, although both actresses have shown eagerness to participate. Curtis shared a photo with Ganatra and writer Jordan Weiss, hinting at their collaboration.
While an official release date has not been announced, Disney is reportedly aiming to commence filming in the upcoming summer.
According to a casting call shared by the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (CAPE), Curtis's character will fulfill her wish for grandchildren. The film will focus on Anna Coleman (played by Lohan), who has a 14-year-old daughter named Harper. Harper endeavors to thwart the wedding between her "longtime single mom" and "British restaurateur Eric Davies." Complicating matters further, Eric's daughter Lily clashes with Harper, leading to a battle of wills between the two teenagers.
In an exciting development, an open casting call was shared by Nisha Ganatra on March 29. They are searching for an actor to portray Harper Coleman, a character described as a "tomboy with a sharp sense of humor."
